We’re always looking for fat writers, artists, and thinkers to collaborate with us.
WÆSTM exists because of fat people’s creativity, intellect, and courage. We want to publish your work, whether you’re an established writer or this is your first time submitting.
We especially encourage submissions from fat Black, Brown, Indigenous, disabled, trans, and working-class writers.
We publish essays, reporting, creative writing, how-to guides and advice, visual art, and hybrid forms that centre fat liberation and justice.

Essays & Reporting
- Length: 500-1500 words
- Include: Brief bio (50-100 words)
- Please include sources for reporting or factual claims
Visual & Audio Work
- Format: High-res images, audio or video files
- Include: Artist statement (200 wd)
- Series: 5-10 images preferred
- Please include captions and alt text.
Creative writing
- Length: Up to 5 poems, or up to 1500 words for longer formats
- Include: Brief bio (50-100 words)
Send a short pitch or description if the piece is unfinished or conceptual and include examples of your previous work. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere.
Pieces must be written in English, or accompanied with a translation. We accept submissions from anywhere in the world.
We do not accept submissions generated by artificial intelligence. All written and artistic work must be created by the submitting author. Limited use of AI tools for proofreading or formatting is acceptable, but the ideas, voice, and creative labour must be human.
Contributor Fee
We currently offer a £20 honorarium per submission for longer pieces, or meaningful compensation in other forms. As we grow and secure additional funding, we intend to increase this rate to better reflect the value of our contributors’ work.
We believe in collaborative editing. If we accept your piece, here’s what to expect:
- Acceptance & Contract
We’ll send you a contract outlining payment, timeline, and rights. Sign and return within 2 weeks. - Developmental Edit
Your editor will send big-picture feedback on structure, argument, and development. You’ll have 2-3 weeks to revise. - Line Edit
We’ll work on language, clarity, and flow. This is a collaborative process — we’ll discuss changes with you. - Copyedit & Fact-Check
Our copyeditor will check grammar, style, and facts. You’ll review and approve final changes. - Publication
We’ll schedule your piece and promote it across our channels. You’ll receive payment within 30 days.
Timeline: From acceptance to publication typically takes 1-2 months, depending on the piece and our editorial calendar. We practice slow publication as part of our commitment to sustainable labour, care for our contributors, and thoughtful editorial work.
